Senior Systems Administrator - Virtualization

The Senior Systems Administrator (SSA) Virtualization shall plan, lead and, if necessary, conduct site-surveys and uses the information acquired to produce a complete delineation of products and services, support equipment, computer, and electronic equipment installations required for the site to fully support mission operations. The SSA Virtualization shall plan, direct, and, if necessary, conduct regular, special, and integrated system test programs on virtualization equipment. The SSA Virtualization shall prepare and conduct special reports and presentations that contain actionable information, which is pertinent to individual site operations. The SSA Virtualization shall conduct integrated equipment system test. They shall plan, prepare and conduct on the job training to FBI and junior personnel, as required. The SSA Virtualization shall coordinate with other field engineers. The SSA Virtualization shall support the unit with other duties as assigned within the scope of work.

Position Qualifications

Ten (10) plus years of experience in designing, managing, administering, documenting, troubleshooting, and supporting multiple, heterogeneous computer networks in both production and development environments.

Install, configure, implement, and validate installation of components on networks including but not limited to:

  • Citrix XenServer and XenApp
  • Citrix NetScaier
  • Microsoft (current Version) Failover Cluster
  • Microsoft (current Version) Hyper-V Manager
  • Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM)
  • Hypervisors and virtualization sub-systems
  • Container Systems
  • Infrastructure as Code methodologies

Administer a variety of virtualization environments including Windows, Citrix and Linux

Demonstrate strong customer service skills

Resolve operational technical challenges and articulate ideas, concepts, and needs to management

Perform duties independently, without direct supervision, and without detailed guidance from superiors

Author and utilize scripting languages, mainly but not limited to PowerShell, to automate tedious, repetitive, and/or error prone tasks related to installation, configuration, and management of IT systems and services

Step in mid-problem and provide advanced troubleshooting and support to others

Optimize existing systems in light of new technologies as they come to market

Provide support to administrators across an enterprise

Evaluate the effectiveness of existing technologies in contrast to emerging technologies

Explore emerging technology through independent research

Liaise between field support and management

Properly setup, from the box, new components without direct assistance

Participate in the Change Control process meetings, providing direct and candid feedback regarding ideas for proposed changes to systems

Document, test, and deploy modernization technologies to existing production environments

Draft, review, and finalize procedures, security documentation, and general usage instructions for any familiar component

Senior Systems Engineer – Citrix- Virtualization

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Operational Technology Division (OTD), Digital Forensics and Analysis Section (DFAS), Operational Networks and Technologies Unit (ONTU), located at Quantico, Virginia, is composed of two (2) programs: the Forensic Networks Program (FNP) and the Digital Forensic Technologies Program (DFTP).

All FBI investigative personnel encountering fragile digital evidence are dependent upon the services and technical support provided by the ONTU.  Providing investigator-driven capabilities for latent digital evidence preview, ingest, analysis, and review affords ONTU’s customers the ability to conduct investigations and full forensic examinations for presentation in a court of law.

VMWare Emgineer

The Sr. Systems Engineer (SE) - VMWare/Windows provides subject matter expertise for systems hosted within CLASSIFIED and UNCLASSIFIED networks in Falls Church, VA, They are responsible for the overall architecture, administration, and maintenance tasks on VMWare 6.x virtualization infrastructure.

They assist with a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, managing hosts and virtual machine resource allocation (CPU, memory, hard disk, network interface), perform routine maintenance (patches, updates), application functionality and availability verifications, coordination with customers on support requirements, upgrades, support for DHHQ datacenter facility issues, and system hardware issues.

Additionally, the SE works with the Cybersecurity team ensuring that the VMWare solution is documented, maintained, and ready for risk assessment as part of a system accreditation process; this involves scanning, patching, and documenting the production VMWare solution.

Responsibilities:
• Manages VMWare 6.x platform servers; plans and executes platform upgrade activities for VMWare.
• Installs, configures, maintains, administers and integrates customer systems, third party application servers, and system software and hardware within the Windows Environment.
• Reviews, analyzes and assesses Vendor's proposed changes, upgrades and needs.
• Coordinates system hardware and software testing with development teams to ensure transparent implementation and appropriate capacity.
• Coordinates and performs firmware upgrades and patch management to Operating System (OS) and Application software.
• Investigates and proposes solutions for development and customer needs to improve reliability, continuity, and maintainability for Windows systems hardware and software.
• Models potential changes within the Systems Architecture and provides a gap analysis regarding the need for tuning or changes that will enhance system performance.
• Monitors and ensures that backup data and resilience methods are scheduled and functioning appropriately.
• Provisions and loads PKI certificates on servers.
• Develop system administration documentation in support of accreditation requirements.
• Participate in or lead troubleshooting and incident resolution of complex high severity incidents.
• Accurately log/ticket, track, and resolve incidents using the ITSM system (i.e. Remedy).
• Provide accurate, timely, and professional resolution on all supported incidents and issues.
• Provide a high level of professionalism and customer service.
• Provide updates to management and project leadership of ongoing projects and high priority issues.
• Other duties as assigned.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated technical competency in the following areas:
  • VMWare Server Virtualization (6.x)
  • Windows Server (2012R2, 2016)
  • Storage Area Networks
  • Network communication processes
  •  Familiar with administration of Active Directory (AD) directory services, server/user security through group policies objects (GPO), Windows domain infrastructure (with multiple domains), and administration of organizational units (OU).
  •   Experience with patch management using multiple tools (Ivanti/Shavlik, SCCM, WSUS, etc.).
  •   Proficient with various security assessment/hardening tools (STIG, SCAP, checklists, Nessus, etc.).
  •   Strong oral and written communications skills.
  •   Proven ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
  •   Project management skills for setting priorities to meet project deadlines.
  •   Ability to understand and apply knowledge of current industry standard systems architectures.
  •   Strong critical thinking skills that facilitate timely problem-solving.
  •   Other desired experience: CommVault, SolarWinds, Citrix XenDesktop, MS Exchange, Network Administration.


Requirements:
• BS Degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field (High School Diploma and equivalent technical experience and certification may be used in lieu of BS Degree).
• 8+ years’ experience in a technical IT role; 10+ years without BS Degree.
• 5+ years’ engineering or system administration experience.
• 3+ years’ experience supporting VMWare server virtualization.
• 3+ years’ experience with Windows Server 2008R2, 2012 or 2016.
• Active DoD SECRET clearance or recently active SECRET security clearance (within 24 months).
• Have or obtain DoD 8570 IAT Level 2 certification (e.g. Security + CE, CISSP, etc.) within three months of beginning position.
• Government contract requires person possess proof of U.S. citizenship.

Description:
The Citrix Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) System Administrator will provide on-site subject matter expertise of the VDI solution hosted within a secret network in Falls Church, VA and perform daily system administration and support duties. The current VDI solution is a Citrix XenDesktop integration with VMWare vSphere presenting a Windows 10 desktop on WYSE thin client workstations.

Responsibilities:
• Provide subject matter expertise on the Citrix VDI solution hosted within a secret network
• Perform system administration and support duties on the existing Citrix VDI solution
• Accurately log/ticket, track, and resolve incidents using the Remedy ITSM system
• Provide accurate, timely, and professional resolution on all supported incidents and issues
• Maintain system administration documentation in support of accreditation requirements
• Provide a high level of professionalism and customer service
• Provide updates to management and project leadership of all ongoing critical issues
• Assist local support team primary POCs with system administration tasks (as needed)
